Silicon Valley International School
Palo Alto, CA
The Silicon Valley International School is a prekindergarten through High School education program that focuses on how inquiry and bilingualism empowers young minds to embrace complexity, think critically from multiple perspectives, and demonstrate integrity, and sensitivity across cultures. The school is expanding their mission to a new campus in Palo Alto focused on educating the prekindergarten through 2nd grade student groups.
The new campus will capitalize on Silicon Valley’s year-round temperate weather and the school’s reverence for nature with classrooms and common rooms directly linked to outdoor gathering spaces and play yards. Coming together to play and to share a meal is integral to the school’s culture of creating community and has been a driver for the design of the open spaces. Additionally, the site is located adjacent to a channelized creek within a flood zone, requiring the building to be elevated 6’ above the surrounding elevation. This unique condition provides another opportunity to integrate curriculum into the design of the site that tells the story of water, climate change and sea level rise.
